Abstract
ABSTRACTAdolescence is a critical period of growth that requires adequate nutrition for optimal development. However, poor dietary habits and inadequate nutrient intake among adolescents can lead to malnutrition, affecting their health and academic performance. This study assessed the anthropometric status and dietary diversity of adolescent students at Government Secondary School, Dorayi Babba, Kano. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 50 male students aged 12 to 17 years. Data collection involved anthropometric measurements, including weight, height, and Body Mass Index (BMI), to assess nutritional status. Dietary diversity was evaluated using the 24-hour dietary recall method, and a structured questionnaire was used to gather information on food intake patterns and frequency. The data were analyzed to determine the prevalence of malnutrition and dietary diversity levels among the students. The findings revealed that 82% of the students were underweight, while only 18% had a normal BMI, with no cases of overweight or obesity. The dietary diversity assessment showed that cereals were the most frequently consumed food group (84%), whereas the intake of protein-rich foods, fruits, and vegetables was low. Although 64% of the respondents ate three meals per day, the overall diet lacked variety, which could contribute to nutritional deficiencies.
