Abstract
Medicinal plants have been recognized and utilized in traditional medicine and pharmaceuticalindustries for centuries. One such plant, jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) from the Rhamnaceaefamily has gained attention in various fields, including nutrition and food science, due to itsmedicinal and nutritional properties. This study was aimed to determine the antimicrobialactivity of Ziziphusmauritiana leaves extract against staphylococcus aureus and Candidaalbicans from clinical isolate . Preliminary phytochemicals screening of the leaves extract ofziziphusmauritiana was carried out using standard analytical methods. The aqueous andEthanol extracts of Ziziphusmauritiana leaf has been screened for antimicrobial activitiesagainst Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans gotten from clinical isolate using agar welldiffusion broth dilution method. The bacterial isolate have been reconfirmed using standardbacteriological methods and biochemical tests. The fungal isolate have been reconfirmed usinggerm tube test. The result of the phytochemicals constituents revealed the presence of alkaloids, steroids, phenols, tannins saponins, terponoid were all present in ethanol extract while glycosides, steriod, were absent in the aqueous Extract. The inhibitory zones of the Ethanol Extract againststaphylococcus aureus ranged from 13.0– 28.0 while Candida albicans ranged from 8.0-10.0(mm) at 12.5(mg/ml) and 50(mg/ml) respectively. The inhibitory zones of the aqueous Extractagainst the clinical isolate of Staphylococcus aureus ranged from 5.5-11.5(mm) and 5.0-8.0(mm) for Candida albicans at 25(mg/ml) and 50(mg/ml) respectively. However, Staphylococcusaureus was more susceptible to the extract with an MIC of 100mg/ml. The observed inhibitoryactivity of the leaf extract against the clinical isolated could be due to phytochemical constituentpresent in the plant extracts of Ziziphusmauritiana.
