Abstract

ABSTRACTThe study which is aimed at studying the distribution and abundance of different insect orders in some selected locations of Bayero University, Old Campus, Kano was conducted between January - February 2025 in Bayero University, Kano. Three (3) different ecological areas were selected as Site A, B and C. At each site, transect was used. Different insect collection methods which included; Handpicking, pitfall trapping and sweep netting were used. Appropriate taxonomic guide was used in the identification of different insect orders orders. The result of the study indicated that Lepidoptera was highest (43.69%) in the Ecological Study Area while Diptera (13.59%) was the lowest. In the Botanic Garden, Lepidoptera was the highest (47.33%) while Hemiptera (3.82%) was the lowest. Also, in the Solar Plant, Lepidoptera was the highest (62.50%) while Odonata (37.50) was the lowest. Ecological Indices indicated that the Botanic Garden had the highest diversity, the Ecological Study Area had a moderate diversity while the solar plant had the lowest diversity. In conclusion, Lepidoptera was the most abundant insect order (48.18%). It is recommended that flowering plants and native plants be planted in the Solar Plant and Ecological Study Area respectively, who plant and flower diversity be preserved in the Botanic Garden.
