Abstract
ABSTRACT This study examined audience perception of radio messages on farmer-herders crises in controlling peace and unity in Nigeria:A study of Coal City 92.9 FM. Respondents were drawn from 17 local government areas in Enugu State which was purposively chosen by the researcher. Due to the largeness of the study population, the Taro Yamane formula was used to arrive at the sample size of the study. The study employed survey research method. To this end, 400 copies of questionnaire were issued to these respondents. However, Simple percentage and tables were used for data analysis. The study used the media framing theory and Agenda setting Theory Perspective as its theoretical foundation. The findings showed that Enugu residents are exposed to Coal City FM messages on farmer-herders crises; Coal City FM reportage on farmer-herders crisis in Enugu state has been effective in managing farmer-herders crises. Also, it was found that media are known to sensitize crises situations, promoting prejudice, stereotypes about groups and individuals, and even instigate and sustain violent conflict. The study concluded that the exposure of citizens in Enugu concerning this crises have been made effective by Coal City FM, it is therefore seen as a necessity that it keeps carrying on its good work without stoppage on the way. The various impediments that hinders its effectivity most times should be carefully evaluated and be made a problem solved for the efficacy of radio media function. The study recommended that the media should be encouraged never to relent in the discharge of its duties as it concerns getting them more exposed and totally aware of Farmer-herders crisis. Thus, channeling their efforts towards mitigating the upsurge of the crisis.
