Domestic Violence Against Women and the Effect on Their Mental Health in Ado Ekiti Ekiti State Nigeria

Abstract Domestic violence is a pervasive issue with significant implications for the mental health of married women. This study investigates the effects of domestic violence on the mental health of married women in Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria, focusing on conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study also examines the influence of socio-cultural factors on domestic violence and evaluates the availability and effectiveness of mental health interventions for affected women. A structured questionnaire was administered to 200 married women selected through a multistage sampling technique. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including frequency tables, percentages, t-tests, and chi-square analysis, were used to analyze the data. The findings reveal that domestic violence significantly impacts mental health, with depression and PTSD being the most severe outcomes. A strong positive correlation exists between the severity of domestic violence and the development of specific mental health disorders. Key socio-cultural factors contributing to domestic violence include patriarchal norms and financial dependency. Although mental health interventions such as medical treatments and counseling services are available, their accessibility and effectiveness require improvement. The study concludes that domestic violence profoundly affects the mental health of married women and highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions. Recommendations include strengthening mental health services, addressing socio-cultural drivers of domestic violence, and increasing awareness to prevent abuse. Suggestions for further research include exploring the long-term mental health impacts of domestic violence and assessing the effectiveness of specific intervention programs.
