Abstract
Coccidiosis, an enteric parasitic disease caused by species of Eimeria, remains a major constraint to poultry production globally. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and intensity of coccidiosis in slaughtered chickens from selected Live Birds Markets (LBMs) in Kano State, Nigeria, using the macroscopic lesion-scoring method. A total of 400 chickens (Broilers, Layers, and Local breeds) were randomly sampled from four major LBMs (e.g., Yan-Lemo, Kofar Wambai, Unguwa Uku, and Sabon Gari) over a three-month period. Post-mortem examination of the entire gastrointestinal tract (GIT) was performed, and the severity of lesions was scored using the standardized Johnson and Reid (1970) scale (0 to 4). The overall prevalence of coccidiosis was found to be 42.5% (170/400).
