Geophysical Investigation of Leachate Contamination Using Electrical Resistivity Tomography. a Case Study of Army Barrack Dump Site, Effurun

Abstract
Leachate contamination from dump sites poses significant environmental and health risks. This study employed Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) to investigate leachate contamination at the Army Barracks dump site in Effurun. The objectives were to delineate the extent of contamination, identify potential migration pathways, and evaluate the effectiveness of ERT in environmental monitoring. Terametre was used to take readings along two profiles of 100m each. The results revealed a low-resistivity zone for profile 1 ranging between 4ohm to 10ohm, along the profile path that is close to the dumpsite and this shows that contamination in the area is heavy along profile 1. Along profile 2, it is observed that the first 5m has low-resistivity values ranging between 4ohm to 10ohm and this also shows that the area has experienced lots of leachate contamination. Although the other parts of profile 2 still have relatively high resistivity values, all resistivity values fall within the contamination range as all the values are low. This was mapped in 2D to show the distribution and migration direction of the contamination plume. The study demonstrates the efficacy of ERT in investigating leachate contamination and highlights its potential for monitoring and managing environmental pollution at similar dump sites.
