Abstract
Retrenchment is a government-initiated program which is aim towards an increase in efficiency and effectiveness of workers and also reduces the number of employees, which in turn lowers costs of government. This study aims to access the Effects of Retrenchment on the Morale and Productivity of Workers in Kaduna Civil Services. The study utilizes a survey-based research approach, with questionnaires as the primary instrument for data collection. The study included civil servants working in the local government education authority (L.G.E.A) and public health centers (P.H.C) of Kaduna north and south local government respectively, totaling 381 participants and 324 respondents at 85.04 rate of return. The study findings suggest that the state governor should take proper look into the issue of incessant retrenchment of workers and make effort in implementing different methods of addressing problems that cause the downsizing of workers. The study also found that negative effect of retrenchment are more prevalence in the sense that retained workers don't have job security feelings anymore and tends to be less productive and motivated to work. The study recommends that Retained civil servants should be in good mood to understand their employers' motive behind the retrenchment exercise and also understand that working with dedication and action oriented mind will only take the organisation higher.
