Abstract
AbstractThe study investigated Factors Affecting the Enrollment of Students into the Department of Fine and Applied Arts in Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, aims to explore the various elements influencing student enrollment in fine and applied arts programs. Despite the intrinsic value of arts education, enrollment numbers have been declining, prompting an investigation into underlying causes. Cross-sectional survey design was adopted for the study. The study was carried out in Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN).. The population of the study was 610 students, consisting of students of junior secondary school level in Nwafor Orizu College of Education Demonstration Secondary School and students of Fine and Applied Arts in Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe. The sample size was two hundred and fifty (250) students. Simple random sampling technique was used to obtain the sample from the entire population. The instrument that was used for data collection was a self-structured questionnaire. An 18 - item questionnaire was generated from six (6) research questions and tables designed to gather data. Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was used to measure reliability of instrument and the outcome was 0.83. The questionnaire were distributed using two different methods which are electronic and face to face. The statistical tool used was arithmetic mean. Key factors identified include financial constraints, such as the high cost of materials and equipment, which deter potential students from pursuing these programs. Additionally negative societal attitudes toward arts education, contribute significantly to low enrollment rates. The study also highlights the role of teaching quality in secondary level; poor teaching methods and a lack of engagement from educators can diminish students' interest in visual arts. To address these challenges, the research proposes several strategies aimed at improving enrollment. These include Initiatives to inform students and parents about the career opportunities in Fine and Applied Arts; enhancing art education in secondary schools to ensure students have a solid foundation and appreciation for the subject; establishing mentorship programs where students can interact with professionals in the arts to gain insights into potential career paths. By identifying these factors and proposing actionable solutions, the study seeks to foster a more favorable environment for students considering a future in fine and applied arts.
