Abstract
Hypertension in the juvenile population is becoming an increasing concern due to its potential long-term health implications. It can lead to various cardiovascular and renal complications if left untreated. Evaluating hematological parameters in juvenile hypertensive patients offers valuable insights into the mechanisms contributing to this condition. This study included 10 juvenile hypertensive patients and 10 normotensive controls from the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, Nigeria. Blood samples were analyzed for red blood cell (RBC) count, packed cell volume (PCV), and platelet counts, among others. Results showed significantly higher RBC counts (6.78 ± 0.34 cells/µL, p = 0.001) and platelet counts (316.00 ± 59.18 × 10³/µL, p = 0.006), but markedly reduced PCV (31.80 ± 2.39%, p = 0.0001) in hypertensive subjects. These findings indicate a complex relationship between erythropoiesis, immune regulation, and coagulation in juvenile hypertension, emphasizing the need for further investigation.
