Abstract
Construction materials constitute a major component of any construction project, the effective management of which dictates, to a great extent, the delivery of construction project. While it is no doubt that construction material flow in many Nigerian construction sites is significantly affected by poor material management and considering the resulting consequences, it therefore points out the need to address this problem by providing a clear theoretical understanding of the basic constructs and the related concepts of a material management as required in the construction industry to enhance the overall project performance. It is on this premise that this study is set this study was set to assess the construction material management strategies in construction sites with a view to enhancing the adoption and practice of material management in construction sites. This study adopted an exploratory survey research method and Primary data were collected by administering a structured questionnaire physically and through on-line survey to construction participants/professionals. Data collected was analysed using percentiles and mean item scores. The study identified and evaluated the level of adoption of 8 (considered) most important construction materials management strategies which revealed that the most implemented material management strategy is the estimation, budgeting, planning and programming of construction in construction site. In light of the result obtained indicating the significantly low level of implementation of some material management strategies in construction sites, the study therefore identified and evaluated the level of effect of some encumbrances hindering the effective implementation of construction material management strategies in construction and thereafter measures to enhance the implementation of construction management strategies in construction sites was proffered.
