Abstract
Rabies remains a critical public health concern in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas where dog ownership is prevalent. This study aimed to assess the awareness of rabies vaccination among dog owners in Ingawa Local Government Area of Katsina State. Utilizing a descriptive cross-sectional survey design, the research gathered data from 110 dog owners through a structured questionnaire, focusing on their knowledge of rabies, vaccination practices, and sources of information regarding rabies vaccination. The findings indicated a significant gap in awareness, with many dog owners lacking adequate knowledge about the disease and the importance of vaccination. Approximately 63.64% of respondents were unaware of the rabies virus's transmission and symptoms. Although a majority of dog owners recognized the necessity of vaccination, only 72.73% reported that their dogs had been vaccinated against rabies.
