Assessment of Plastic Waste Disposal Among Students and Staff of Faculty of Education University of Benin

Abstract

ABSTRACT ThestudywasconductedtoexaminetheassessmentofplasticwastedisposalamongstudentsandstaffoffacultyofEducationUniversityofBenin.Theprimarydatawascollectedfrom1860studentsinthefacultyofEducation,UniversityofBenin,Edostate.Aproportionatestratifiedsamplingtechniquewasusedtoselect186respondentsoutof1860studentsandquestionnairewasadministeredtothem.ThereliabilityoftheinstrumentwasdoneusingCronbachAlphareliabilitycomputationwhichyieldsaco-efficientindexof0.726.Fourresearchquestionswereraisedtoguildthestudyanditwasvalidatedbytheprojectsupervisorandtwootherlecturesforfaceandcontentvalidity. Datacollectedwasanalysedinthecomputerusingfrequencycount,simplepercentageandmeanwerealsoemployedtoanalysethedatacollectedfromtheansweredresearchquestions.ThefindingsofthestudyrevealedthatplasticwastedisposalisasignificantenvironmentalissueintheFaculty,TheFacultydoesnotprovideadequatesupportforplasticwastemanagementamongotherchallengesamongothers.Thestudyconcludedthatthereisapositiveattitudeandpracticesamongstudenttowardswastedisposalinthefacultyofeducation,UniversityofBenin. Thestudyalsoconcludedthattherearesomeissuespertainingtothechallengesinvolvedinplasticwastedisposalthatstillneedimprovement,especiallyconcerningfacilitiesandsupportforproperplasticwastedisposalinthefaculty.Thestudyalsoconcludedthattheassessmentofplasticwastedisposalamonguniversitystudentsrevealsaconcerninglackofawarenessandactionregardingsustainablewastemanagementpractices.Despitethegrowingconcernaboutplasticpollutionintheinstitution,manystudentsstillexhibitminimalengagementwithrecyclingsystemsandproperdisposalmethods.ItwasrecommendedthatPlasticwastedisposalmanagementpoliciesandenforcementofsanitationlawsintheUniversityshouldbeenergized,andvariousenvironmentalorganizationsandsocietiestodomoreuntilthedreamedcleanenvironmentinNigeriabecomesarealityandtheGoverningbody,DeansandHeadofdepartmentshouldimplementawarenessprogramstoeducatestudentsabouttheenvironmentalimpactsofplasticwastedisposalandtheimportanceofproperdisposalwhichincludesworkshops,seminars,andinformationalmaterials.
