Abstract
ABSTRACT This study examines the role of radio programmes in promoting sustainable environmental practices among residents of Owerri Metropolis. The main objective was to assess how effectively radio broadcasting contributes to the awareness, attitude, and behavior of the public toward environmental sustainability. The study adopted both quantitative and qualitative research methods, utilizing structured questionnaires administered to 100 respondents selected from various parts of Owerri Metropolis. Data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and frequency tables to interpret respondents’ views. The findings revealed that a large proportion of residents listen to environmental radio programmes regularly, indicating a high level of media engagement. The most common topics broadcasted include waste management, sanitation and hygiene, and climate change awareness. The results further showed that radio programmes significantly influence listeners to adopt sustainable environmental practices such as proper waste disposal, clean surroundings, and participation in community sanitation exercises. However, the study identified challenges such as inadequate programme content, limited audience interaction, and inconsistent airing as factors limiting effectiveness. The study concludes that radio remains a vital medium for environmental education and behavioral change in Owerri Metropolis. It recommends that media organizations and environmental agencies collaborate to enhance programme quality, consistency, and interactivity to further promote sustainable environmental practices.
