Abstract

ABSTRACTAssessment of hematological parameters cannot only be used to determine the extent of deleterious effect of extracts on the blood of an animal, but can also be used to explain blood related functions of a plant extract or its product. The effect of ethanol extract of pennisetum purpureum roots on some hematological indices of albino rats was investigated. A total of 20 albino rats were divided into five groups of four rats each. Group 1 served as the control and received no extract. Groups 2, 3, 4 and 5 were administered with 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg/kg body weight of the ethanol extract of pennisetum purpureum roots for 28 days, respectively. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected for the determination of hemoglobin concentration (Hb), Packed cell volume (PCV) and white blood cell (WBC) count. The results showed that the extract increased the Hb, PCV and WBC count, it was also observed that the highest concentration of the extract significantly (p
