Abstract
ABSTRACTThis study investigated the antidiabetic potential of ethanolic extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa (Roselle) on alloxan-induced diabetic albino rats. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion or action. The research evaluated the effects of Hibiscus sabdariffa ethanolic extract on fasting blood glucose levels, body weight, and biochemical parameters in diabetic rats.A total of fifteen rats were divided into five groups: normal control, diabetic control, positive control (treated with Glucophage), and two groups treated with different doses of the extract. Diabetes was induced using alloxan monohydrate. The experimental period lasted for 14 days, during which fasting blood glucose and body weight were monitored. Results revealed that the ethanolic extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa significantly reduced blood glucose levels in a dose-dependent manner and improved body weight compared to the diabetic control. Phytochemical analysis showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenols, and saponins, which are responsible for its biological activity. The findings suggest that Hibiscus sabdariffa ethanolic extract possesses strong antidiabetic properties and may serve as a potential source for developing herbal-based antidiabetic agents. Keywords: Hibiscus sabdariffa, Diabetes mellitus, Alloxan, Ethanolic extract, Antidiabetic, Phytochemicals.CHAPTER 1
