Abstract
In an earth-space communication link, the most important thing is the availability of a signal for the effective performance of multimedia services on which human activities solely rely. This research has examined the assessment of the effects of scattering effects on terrestrial free-space optical links in a tropical location. Rainfall rate has been investigated, and results show that all the examined stations exhibited a rainfall rate that was higher than 100 mm/hr, which is an equivalent of 10 dB attenuation. This recorded rainfall rate of 100 mm/hr for the stations is dreadful for effective signal transmission, and there will be impairments or degradation along the propagation path on the Free Space Optical (FSO). Analysis of the specific attenuation from the assessment has proven the realities of the possibilities of signal degradation. However, free-space optical (FSO) communication at propagation links at distances of 0.5 km and 1 km has been investigated for the selected stations in the tropical location. However, the analysis conducted on the FSO link at distances of 0.5 km and 1 km is likely to affect earth-space communication propagating along the FSO link.
