Abstract
This research explores Simplicity and Awareness: A Deep Ecology Perspective in Mary Oliver’s Work. Using Arne Næss’s Deep Ecology theory as its framework, the study examines how Oliver’s poetry embodies ecological consciousness through themes of simplicity, mindfulness, and spiritual connection to the natural world. The research analyzes selected poems such as “Wild Geese,” “The Summer Day,” “Sleeping in the Forest,” and “When Death Comes.” It finds that Oliver’s poetic vision promotes an attitude of humility toward nature and celebrates the intrinsic value of all living beings. Her simple diction and vivid natural imagery invite readers to cultivate ecological awareness and reject materialistic lifestyles that harm the environment. The study concludes that Oliver’s work offers not only aesthetic pleasure but also ethical guidance, demonstrating how poetry can nurture a deeper relationship between humans and the environment. By presenting simplicity and awareness as paths to ecological harmony, Mary Oliver’s poetry becomes a powerful literary expression of Deep Ecology’s principles.
