The Influence of Family Structure on Academic Achievement of Secondary School Students in Ondo West Local Government Area.

Abstract
This study examined the influence of family structure on academic achievement ofsecondary school students in Ondo West Local Government Area. Descriptive researchdesign was used in carrying out the project and a random sampling technique were usedin selecting one hundred (100) respondents of secondary school students for the study. Astructured questionnaire was the research instrument used to collect information fromthe respondents. A 4-Likert Scale questionnaire was designed and used for datacollection. The research instrument was analysed using simple percentage, mean and t-test to analyse the responses of the respondents based on the stated research questionsand hypotheses. Findings showed that socio economic statuses of the parent do affect theacademic performance of students with a sectional mean of 3.03. The findings alsorevealed that parents’ educational attainment also influence the academic performanceof students with a sectional mean of 3.00. In addition, revealed that family size and familystructure have significant influences on the academic performance of students with asectional mean of 3.15. The study therefore recommended that there is need for a goodfamily structure to aid student’s academic development. This in turn will improve theacademic performance of students. This study also recommended that each family shouldfind means of expanding their sources of income as this will have great impact onstudents. Students that are well catered for will perform better academically. The findingsof this study also revealed that the bigger the size of the family, the more the problemsfacing, directly or indirectly, it has effect on the children from such a family.
