Abstract
This study explores how zinc can help manage diabetes caused by streptozotocin (STZ) in Wistar rats. The goal was to see if zinc could be a useful treatment by looking at its effects on inflammation, key metabolic enzymes, and electrolyte balance. Male and female Wistar rats (7–10 weeks old, weighing 120–180 g) were divided into nine groups. Group 1 was the negative control, while Group 2 was the positive control. All other groups, except the negative control, were given STZ (60 mg/kg body weight) through an injection. Group 8 received zinc treatment mixed with 0.5 ml of distilled water for seven days, while Group 9 received metformin, a standard diabetes drug. The treatments lasted for 14 days before the animals were sacrificed. Blood samples were collected, and the pancreas and kidney were examined. The results showed that zinc helped regulate carbohydrate metabolism and balance both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory markers. It also helped maintain electrolyte levels, which could protect against diabetes-related complications. GC-MS analysis revealed several bioactive compounds that may have contributed to these effects. n-Hexadecanoic acid and tetradecanoic acid were identified, both known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which could help reduce diabetes-related damage.1,3,5-Benzenetriol (phloroglucinol) was also present and may improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. Additionally, benzoic acid, methyl ester, which has antimicrobial and metabolic benefits, was detected. These findings suggest that zinc could be a valuable addition to diabetes treatment, especially in places with limited access to expensive medications. The presence of bioactive compounds with protective effects further supports zinc’s potential in managing diabetes, making it worth further research.
