Abstract
ABSTRACT This study “Assessment of students’ attitude, interest and motivation towards learning Biology in Science Secondary Schools of Kano Metropolis, Nigeria” The research design of the study was Survey research design. The population of the study consisted of all senior secondary school ranging from (SS I to SS III) numbering 1,050 Biology students in science senior secondary schools in Kano Metropolis. A proportionate simple random sampling technique was used to obtain a sample of 278 SS 1 - III biology students. The main instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire entitled “Assessment of students’ attitude, interest and motivation towards learning Biology in science secondary schools of Kano Metropolis, Nigeria”. The study found that students of Science Secondary Schools in Kano Metropolis have positive attitudes, positive interest and positive motivation toward learning Biology Subject. Also, Students of Science Secondary Schools in Kano Metropolis are positively affected toward learning biology subject and the Study concluded that, the attitude, interest, motivation and factors affecting student attitude, interest and motivation are highly positive. The study recommended that; the school administration should advantageously make use of the learners’ positive attitude to create a strong inclination and culture of biology as a subject in science secondary schools where students can score favorably like in any other subject. The curriculum designers and the teachers should articulate well on the usefulness and applicability of biology in general so that students create positive interest towards the subject and subsequently strive to improve in the subject, to improve the teaching and learning of Biology in Kano Metropolis and improve students achievement in the subject.
