Abstract
ABSTRACT Iron deficiency anaemia is a common tropical disease. The ABO blood group (BG) system is of great importance for blood transfusion and organ transplantation. The understanding of the different blood groups ability to retain iron in their system can give an insight into their ability to handle the disease, iron deficiency anaemia and iron overload. Total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and packed cell volume estimation levels were studied in 40 apparently healthy Madonna students in Elele, Rivers state Nigeria. The ABO blood groups of the subjects were also determined. They were aged between 19 and 21 years both males and females. The results were expressed in Mean±SD (standard deviation). Data obtained from this study were analyzed using paired samples t-Test and one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) which were used to compare means and values were considered significant at (P0.05). From the result, the study shows the Group AB total iron binding capacity (668.63±123.15) were significantly higher than Group O total iron binding capacity (555.18±24.16) (p
