Abstract
The study interrogates the impact of Christianity on Calabar. From its introduction in the late 19th century, Christianity has profoundly influenced the social, cultural, and religious landscape of this Nigerian city. The study observed that, one of the most notable effects of Christianity in Calabar is the spread of education and literacy. Missionaries established schools and educational institutions, providing access to education for both boys and girls. As a result, literacy rates increased, equipping individuals with knowledge and skills that helped uplift their socio-economic status. The study adopts a qualitative analytical methodology and utilized the historical method of data collection which relies on primary and secondary sources of data collection. Findings from the study indicate that, the introduction of Christian ethics and values has fostered a sense of communal harmony, respect, and empathy among the people. Concepts such as forgiveness, love, and generosity have been embraced, shaping interpersonal relationships and contributing to the overall improvement of the society. It has also played a vital role in the fight against social injustices. Their efforts have raised awareness and sparked movements that have ultimately contributed to the eradication of various forms of discrimination and exploitation. The study maintained that, it is important to acknowledge the complications and negative consequences that the introduction of Christianity has brought to Calabar. The Christianization process has disrupted traditional religious practices and provoked tensions with adherents of indigenous religions. It has led to the loss of certain cultural practices and religious rituals, contributing to the erosion of indigenous identities. The study concludes that, in view of some of the challenges, Christianity has had a transformative impact on Calabar. Its introduction has accelerated education, improved social cohesion, and aided in the fight against social injustices. Nonetheless, it is essential to recognize and address the negative repercussions, such as the displacement of indigenous religions.
