Abstract
ABSTRACT Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a gram positive organism that serves as an opportunistic pathogen and frequent colonizer of the epithelium causing severe diseases in human and animals. The widespread use of antibiotics both in human and Veterinary medicine resulted in the emergence of resistant strains of S. aureus. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a common bacterial pathogen responsible for a variety of infections. Resistance to methicillin is determined by the mecA gene, which encodes the low-affinity penicillin-binding protein PBP 2. Lately, new methicillin resistance gene, mecC has been discovered from humans, animals and food products. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is now a global epidemic, and the prevalence is increasing worldwide. Hemodialysis is one of the ways to treat by kidney function replacement. Infection is the number two cause of death in patients with hemodialysis (HD). Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a common cause of bacteriemia in patients with dialysis. The epidemiological data of MRSA carriers in CKD in Nigeria are still scares. This study was to determine the Prevalence of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Hemodialytic Patients Attending State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, Borno State. The study design was descriptive-analytic with cross sectional study, sampling was collected consecutively. Data on the characteristics of the research subjects was analyzed using chi-squared test. There were 100 hemodialysis patients recruited in this study, the number of patients has MRSA carrier undergoing hemodialysis were 32(32%) while 68(68%) were MSSA. In conclusion the prevalence of MRSA among hemodialysis patients attending State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, Borno, State was found to be 7.0% respectively. Female samples had a higher18%) prevalence of MRSA than male samples (14%)
