Abstract
Composite materials are composed of two or more constituent materials that differ significantly in their physical or chemical properties. The use of conventional materials for coating can be expensive. Conventional coating frequently uses pricey materials or hazardous chemicals that might pollute the air, water, or soil during application and disposal, raising questions about sustainability and the effects on the environment. Using ash from orange peels and chicken feathers as main ingredients, the study addresses the ongoing problem of agricultural waste, and aims to serve as substitute to the conventional materials. 50g of grinded chicken feathers ash, orange peel ash was measured and mixed thoroughly with phosphorus acid acting as a binder, the sample was called sample A. The same method was carried out for the uncarbonized chicken feather and carbonized orange peels known as sample B. sample A and sample B were dissolved in 58.5g of Nacl after applying them on the mild steel, another sample was also used which involved the uncoated mild steel in Nacl solution. Two specimens were removed on each of the samples after the 5th and 10th day. For sample A, it offers some corrosion protection but it does not seem to be successful as other coatings. Sample B has the lowest corrosion rate and offered a mild reduction in corrosion rate over time with protective layer. The corrosion rate increased the most for sample C, but after 10 days the rate reduced with the aid of the passive film formed. In conclusion, the carbonized coating was found suitable in mitigating corrosion, with samples, properly coated having good performance, but improperly coated ones showing poor corrosion resistance.
