Knowledge of Orthodontic Treatment Among the People of Ulakwo in Owerri North Local Government Area

Abstract
ABSTRACT The study's objective is to investigate the knowledge of orthodontic treatment among the people of ulakwo in owerri north local government area, Imo state. A purposive sampling technique among 300 people of ulakwo in which the person conducting the research relies on their judgement to choose the members that will be part of the study was used to evaluate the knowledge of orthodontic treatment among the people. A questionnaire was prepared and circulated among the people in which their responses were collect and presented in frequency and percentage table. Data was analyzed and Chi-square test was used to compare the association of gender and people's knowledge regarding orthodontic treatment. The result from the study showed that 61.76% know that scattered teeth can be corrected with orthodontic appliance, 31.62% have children that thumb suck, 28.31% have children with crooked teeth, 51.47% believe the child can grow out of it, 43.38% says there is no treatment, 46.69% don't know what to do, while 63.97% knows it can be stopped with orthodontic appliances. The study revealed that there is a high knowledge rate of 63.97% for the participants and the hypothesis test also showed that there is significant knowledge of orthodontic treatment among the people of Ulakwo.
