Abstract

Parquetina nigrescens is a plant known for its various therapeutic in traditional medicine. Extraction was done using methanol and ethylacetate solvents. Phytochemical analysis of the leaf were done using standard procedure. Thereafter, thirty-five male albino rats (100-200g) were divided into 7 groups of 5 animals. Group 1was given distilled water only, while group 2-7 were administered AlCl3 at 100mg/kg to induce Alzheimer’s for 14 consecutive days. Animals in group1 served as normal control, group 2 served as disease control, which were not treated, group 3 were treated with standard Donepezil Hydrochloride (5mg/kg), group 4 and 5 were administered methanolic extract of Parquetina nigrescens at 100mg/kg and 200mg/kg respectively, and group 6 and 7 were treated with ethyl-acetate extract of Parquetina nigrescens at 100mg/kg and 200mg/kg respectively. All treatments were administered orally for 28 consecutive days. The behavioral test (Y-maze) was assessed for learning memory. Analysis were carried out on the lipid profile of the serum (TC, HDL,LDL, AST, etc). The methanolic extract showed a significant increase in the learning and memory in Y-maze. Anova and Turkey’s HSD test were used. ANOVA results indicate significant differences among treatments (p < 0.001), with F-values. However, Turkey’s test shows no significant differences among reagents within each extract treatment. Despite this, variations in mean values suggest different impact on serum components, particularly for Sodium, ALP, and TC. The findings indicate that P. nigrescens can be used traditionally in managing hyperlipidmia and potentially reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
