Methods on Development of Drugs from Vernonia Amygdalina Leaf Extract for the Treatment of Parasitic Worm Infection (helminthiasis).

Abstract

ABSTRACT Development of drugs from Vernonia amygdalina leaf extract for the treatment of parasitic worm infection (Helminthiasis) was carried out in a Microbiology Laboratory at Oba, Anambra state.This study was done to investigate the antihelminthic activity of V. amygdalina and using its extracts in developing drugs.The anthelmintic activity was performed in a petridish. The standard drug used Albendazole(400mg) was dissolved in 5ml of water and 200mg was dissolved in 2.5ml of water. The prepared concentrations of the standard drug used and of the extract of 10ml volume were each poured into a separate petridish. One adult worm each was placed into the petridishes. The Time for paralysis was noted when no movement of any sort could be absorbed except when the worm was shaken vigorously and the time of death of the worms were recorded when worms neither moved when shaken nor when given external stimuli.The result showed that the extract has an active effect on the earthworms which means, it kills the earthworms faster than the Albendazole.
