Abstract
ABSTRACT Kidnapping has emerged as a pervasive security threat with profound implications for the socioeconomic development of affected communities. This study examines the impact of kidnapping on the socio-economic development of the people in Owo Local Government Area, Ondo State, Nigeria. It explores the multidimensional consequences of kidnapping, including its effects on economic productivity, social cohesion, and overall quality of life. The study was guided with four research questions, the study employed quantitative and qualitative method, data was collected through the use of questionnaires by distributing 100 questionnaires among the residents of Owo Local Government Area, and qualitative method by interviewing some of the officers in the Area 'A' police Division, Owo, Volunteers from the king's palace and victims. The questionnaire and interview were the only instrument used. One way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test for relationship between variables at 0.05 level of significance. Findings reveal that kidnapping has significantly disrupted economic activities in Owo, deterring investment, reducing agricultural output, and leading to increased unemployment and poverty levels. Socially, the constant threat of abduction has fostered fear, eroded trust within communities, and weakened societal bonds. Furthermore, families of kidnapping victims face long-term psychological trauma and financial burdens from ransom payments. The study also highlights the inadequate response of law enforcement agencies, compounded by limited resources and corruption, which exacerbates the issue. In conclusion, the research underscores that the persistent prevalence of kidnapping poses a severe obstacle to sustainable development in Owo. It calls for concerted efforts by government, community stakeholders, and security agencies to adopt proactive strategies, including strengthening security infrastructure, improving socio-economic opportunities, and fostering collaboration between law enforcement and local communities. By addressing these challenges, Owo Local Government can mitigate the impact of kidnapping and foster a safer and more prosperous environment for its residents.
