Abstract
The rapid urbanization of Enugu, Nigeria, has witnessed a surge in housing development, often at the expense of open spaces and green areas within the city. This project aims to comprehensively assess the multifaceted impacts of housing development on Enugu's open spaces. Through a combination of spatial analysis, community surveys, and environmental assessments, this study investigates the socio-economic, environmental, and cultural consequences of diminishing open spaces in the city. The research examines the social and economic repercussions on local communities, including changes in land values, access to recreational areas, and the overall quality of life. Additionally, the project investigates the environmental implications, focusing on issues such as increased urban heat island effects, reduced biodiversity, and open space management. To understand the cultural significance of open spaces in Enugu, this study delves into the historical context and community perceptions of these areas. By gathering data from residents and stakeholders, it aims to highlight the importance of open spaces for cultural practices, social cohesion, and identity. Ultimately, this research contributes valuable insights into the complex dynamics between housing development and open spaces in Enugu. It offers a basis for informed urban planning decisions and policies that balance the need for housing with the preservation of green spaces and the enhancement of residents' overall well-being.
