Abstract
ABSTRACT A 50litre vertical fire tube steam boiler has been designed and fabricated for use as an apparatus for laboratory practicals. The boiler was fabricated with 6mm thick mild steel sheets, and it is operated by coal or firewood. The boiler was fired from ambient conditions to 100oC where steam was observed to be coming out from the steam. Leak tests and safety valve tests were carried out on the boiler, and it was discovered to be leak proof, while the steam was released at the operational pressure of 1.5bar, and the safety valve passed the safety test of opening for the release of steam pressure at a maximum pressure of 4bar. The steam was measured, and its maximum temperature was determined with a pyrometer to be 160oC. The design problem has been solved.
