Abstract

This study examines the impact of public sector accounting on Nigeria’s financial control system. The research focuses on how accounting standards, budgeting processes, and auditing procedures influence transparency and accountability in the management of public resources. The study adopted a descriptive research design using both primary and secondary data sources. Questionnaires were administered to selected government accounting officers in ministries, departments, and agencies within Abuja and Lagos. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that effective public sector accounting significantly improves financial discipline and control by ensuring that public funds are properly monitored and expenditures align with approved budgets. The study concludes that the adoption of standardized accounting practices strengthens accountability and transparency, thereby improving the nation’s financial control system. It recommends continuous capacity building for government accountants, implementation of International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS), and regular audits to enhance financial integrity.
