Abstract
This study examines the hazards confronting journalism practice in Nigeria with particular reference to Guardian Newspaper, Lagos. It explores the various dangers journalists face in the discharge of their duties and how these hazards affect their performance. The research employed a survey design, using a structured questionnaire administered to 200 staff members of Guardian Newspaper, out of which 180 were retrieved and analyzed using simple percentages. The study revealed that journalists in Nigeria face serious hazards such as kidnapping, physical assault, arrests, threats, poor remuneration, and lack of press freedom. Findings further showed that these hazards significantly affect journalists’ morale and output. However, the introduction of the Freedom of Information Act and advancements in ICT have improved access to information and news dissemination. The study recommends that government, media organizations, and relevant stakeholders should provide insurance cover for journalists, improve working conditions, ensure press freedom, and protect journalists from attacks and harassment.
