Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigates the prevalence of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) among 200 pregnant women attending health facilities and traditional birth attendants (TBAs) in Ikere Local Government Area. The analysis includes demographic variables, HBV and HIV status, and the role of traditional faith-based birth homes in maternal care.Out of the 200 women tested, 98% were negative for HBV, and 2% tested positive, while 98.5% were negative for HIV, with a 1.5% positivity rate. Age-specific analysis identified the highest HBV positivity in the 26–32 age group (4.09%) and the highest HIV positivity in the 40–49 age group (12.5%). Most respondents were married (50%) and resided in urban areas (55.5%).A total of 175 women received care at traditional faith-based homes, with no positive cases of HBV or HIV reported. These homes included CAC Oke Isegun (46 tested), CAC Oke Ibukun (39 tested), Cherubim & Seraphim Oke Imole (51 tested), and CAC Oke Imuse (39 tested), all of which recorded 100% negative results for both HBV and HIV.The findings indicate low overall prevalence of HBV and HIV in the studied population and highlight the role of traditional birth attendants as potential partners in maternal health initiatives. The absence of infections in faith-based homes underscores the importance of integrating such centers into public health frameworks for screening and prevention programs to sustain these encouraging outcomes.
