Abstract
This study investigates the occurrence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Enterobacteriaceae isolated from mobile phones of students in a university setting. A total of 30 bacterial isolates were collected from students' mobile phones and identified through biochemical tests and Gram staining. The antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates was tested against 10 commonly used antibiotics, revealing significant resistance to multiple drugs. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Enterobacter spp., Proteus spp., and Pseudomonas spp.exhibited varying resistance profiles, with Escherichia coli showing resistance to Augmentin (45.5%), Ceporex (36.4%), and Streptomycin (54.5%). Similarly, Klebsiella spp. demonstrated resistance to Augmentin (62.5%), Ceporex (50%), and Streptomycin (62.5%). The results highlight the growing issue of multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in the community, emphasizing the role of mobile phones as potential vectors for bacterial transmission. This study underlines the importance of improving hygiene practices among students to minimize the spread of resistant bacteria and the need for continuous monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in public health settings. The findings suggest that ongoing surveillance and proper antibiotic stewardship are crucial to combat the rise of multidrug-resistant organisms. Future research should focus on investigating the mechanisms behind the resistance observed and exploring potential interventions to reduce the impact of these pathogens.
