Abstract
Diabetic patients are often present with characteristic plasma lipid and lipoprotein abnormalities, including, LDL, VLDL, HDL, and elevated TG levels. Meanwhile, Hellenia speciosa have been a popular folk medicine among traditional practitioners. However, there are questions about its traditional uses due to lack of scientific evidence. This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of Hellenia speciosa stem extract on lipid profile of streptozotocin-induced diabetic of albino rats. The fresh Hellenia speciosa stem were collected, rinsed in clean water, and then left to air dry at room temperature. The experiment was analyzed using standard methods. After treatment of 14 days, result shows that the effect of Hellenia speciosa stem on LDL, VLDL, HDL and TG shows that normal control, negative control, high dose treatment, the medium and the low dose treatment were not significantly different compared to the positive control at (p < 0.05) In conclusion Hellenia speciosa stem extract after treatment was safe and of nutritional benefit to the experimental animals and has shown potency to control lipid profiles in the experimental animals. Further research should be conducted to understudy the mechanism of action of Hellenia speciosa stem extract on the activities of lipid profiles.
