Local Government Administration and Community Development in Nigeria, a Case Study of Igueben Local Government Area

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study is aimed at examining Local Government and Community Development in Nigeria a study of Igueben Local Government Area. The study adopted survey research design. The study is anchored on the Efficiency Services Theory. A total of 858 people participated in the study. The study sample of 858 persons comprised 225 respondents from four communities in the Local Government Area. A structured questionnaire developed by the researchers was used as the instrument for data collection. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while the hypotheses were tested using Chi-Square Statistics Aided by Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS). The study revealed the role of local government in community development projects and that, for communities to be developed, human resources efforts are mostly needed. The study also revealed that the major constraints to local government development is budget allocation sent by the government to the responsible departments in the local government is not always received as and when due for the effective implementation of community development projects. It was concluded that a higher monitoring authority should be set aside to monitor and supervise the existence of checks and balances between the regulations of the local government areas.
