Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the growth performance and carcass quality of broiler chickens fed with roasted groundnut. The proximate composition of the feed was not excluded. A total of 25 chicks were used for this experimental process for a period of six weeks of rearing. The birds were weighed on arrival and were randomly allocated to five treatment groups and five replicates of five birds/replicate using a completely randomized design. The treatment group namely are the control (C), T1 and experimental (T2, T3, T4, T5). The experimental proximate composition of the roasted groundnut showed a value recorded of 11% of moisture, crude protein of 20%, ether extract of 7.5%, crude fibre of 4.5%, ash content of 7.2% and nitrogen free extract of 49.8%. Results showed better improvement of the growth performance on the body weight gain of the broiler chicken at T5 (6%) treatment group with the dietary inclusion of the roasted groundnut feed than other group mentioned. The least initial live weight gain occurred in the Control, T1 group and the maximum value in T3 (3%) and T5 (6%) group. The least final weight gain occurred in the control T1 group with a value of 2552.17 and the maximum value of 2664.94g in T5 (6%) group. The highest total feed intake was recorded under T4 (4%) group and the lowest was recorded under the T2 (2%) group. The total feed intake tends to increase with the advancements of age which may be as a result of roasting processing. The lowest feed conversion ratio was recorded T5 (6%) group and highest was control in the control T1 group. Therefore, roasted groundnut should be emphasized as an inclusion in feed formulation.
