Abstract
This study investigates the effectiveness of billboard advertising campaigns in combating cultism among students in tertiary institutions. With a focus on raising awareness and preventing cult-related activities, the research explores the extent to which billboard campaigns influence students' perceptions and behaviors. A structured questionnaire was administered to gather data on key aspects, including the role of billboard campaigns in providing orientation on the dangers of cultism, sensitizing parents, and supporting school management’s anti-cultism efforts. The findings reveal that billboard campaigns are a significant medium for communicating the adverse effects of cultism, such as academic decline, health risks, and involvement in criminal activities. Respondents agreed that strategically placed billboards create awareness, deter potential cult members, and reinforce the consequences of engaging in cultism. Furthermore, the study highlights the role of school management in maintaining and enhancing the visibility of billboards to maximize their impact. The study concludes that billboard advertising campaigns are effective in reducing cultism by fostering a safer and more informed campus environment. Recommendations include expanding billboard coverage, integrating campaigns with digital media, and periodic evaluation to improve message delivery and effectiveness. Keywords: billboard advertising, cultism, awareness campaigns, student behaviour, tertiary institutions.
