Abstract
This study examines the impact of computerized accounting systems (CAS) on employment within financial institutions, with a specific focus on Union Bank Nigeria Plc’s branch office located on Ahmadu Bello Way, Kaduna. The adoption of computerized accounting systems has become widespread in the banking sector, driven by the need for improved operational efficiency, accuracy in financial reporting, and enhanced data management. However, this technological shift has raised concerns regarding its effects on employment levels and job roles within financial institutions. This research investigates these concerns by analyzing whether the integration of CAS influences employment levels, job roles, and overall workforce dynamics at Union Bank’s Kaduna branch. To achieve these objectives, the study employed a descriptive survey design. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to employees at the branch, targeting their perceptions of job role changes, employment opportunities, and the operational efficiency of computerized accounting systems. The sample included employees across various departments within the bank to capture a comprehensive view of CAS impact across different functions. Data analysis was conducted using statistical techniques such as Chi- Square tests and regression analysis to determine the significance of CAS on employment metrics. The findings revealed that the introduction of CAS at Union Bank’s Kaduna branch has led to significant shifts in job roles, with employees adapting to new responsibilities associated with automated systems, including data oversight and system monitoring. While CAS contributed to a reduction in routine manual tasks, it concurrently introduced roles requiring technical expertise, thereby creating a demand for upskilling among employees.
