Corruption in Nigeria:a Threat to Sustainable Development in Kogi Central, Kogi State

ABSTRACT This study examines the impact of corruption on poverty alleviation and sustainable development in Kogi Central, Kogi State, using a quantitative research design supported by survey methodology. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 150 respondents, selected via stratified random sampling to ensure representation across civil servants, government officials, and community members. The study focused on participants’ perceptions, personal experiences, and the perceived effects of corruption, with responses analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in tables and charts. Findings indicate that corruption is widely recognized as a major issue in both Nigeria and specifically in Kogi Central, with 81.30% of respondents acknowledging its prevalence. Government institutions emerged as the most affected sector, and over 64% of participants reported direct encounters with corrupt practices. The study further reveals that corruption significantly hampers poverty alleviation by limiting access to employment, education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. Key drivers of corruption identified include poor leadership, lack of accountability, and economic hardship. Despite the entrenched nature of corruption, many respondents expressed strong civic awareness and a willingness to engage in anti-corruption efforts. Suggested solutions include enhanced law enforcement, transparency in governance, public awareness campaigns, and increased citizen participation in local development monitoring. The study concludes that corruption poses a serious threat to sustainable development and poverty reduction efforts in the region. Addressing these challenges requires coordinated institutional reforms, citizen engagement, and a strong commitment to accountability at all levels of governance.
