Abstract
ABSTRACT This study determined the bacteriological evaluation of indoor air quality and antimicrobial resistance of airborne isolates recovered from the selected classroom surfaces and laboratories at south campus of the Federal Polytechnic Ede. In this study, classroom 2 had the highest microbial load, suggesting that environmental factors like ventilation, cleaning practices, and occupancy density play a crucial role in the microbial populations. The dominant bacterial isolate was Micrococcus species (90.5%) suggesting it's ubiquity in indoor environments. Streptococcus species (9.5%) were also present, aligning with findings from similar settings. Antibiotic susceptibility tests revealed high resistance levels to Ampiclox (89.5%) and Amoxicillin(89.5%) but low resistance to Ciprofloxacin(5.3%). The study's findings raise concerns about the potential health risks associated with microbial contamination in educational settings. The high prevalence of multi-drug resistant organisms (73.7%) underscores the need for enhanced environmental cleaning and sanitation protocols, improved antimicrobial stewardship and regular monitoring of microbial populations in educational settings.
