Design and Construction of a Smart Energy Saving Electric Heater Using a Microcontroller

This research study, "Design and Construction of a Smart Energy-Saving Electric Heater using Microcontrollers," aimed to design and implement a prototype electric heater that optimizes energy consumption through intelligent control systems. The motivation for the research stemmed from the increasing need for energy-efficient appliances, particularly in developing countries where energy resources are often limited, and the cost of electricity is high. The project seeks to provide a solution by leveraging microcontroller technology to intelligently regulate the heating process, thereby reducing energy wastage and improving the overall efficiency of electric heating systems. The methodology involved both hardware and software implementation. The hardware comprised temperature sensors, a microcontroller unit (MCU), solid-state relays, heating elements, and a display unit. The software development involved programming the microcontroller using C/C++ to execute algorithms that intelligently control the heater unit based on preset temperature thresholds and usage patterns. The system also featured an automated on/off switching mechanism, along with a user interface for customization of heating schedules and timing. The implemented smart heater system was tested in various real - time scenarios, and results showed a significant reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional electric heaters. The system demonstrated the ability to maintain desired temperatures with minimal power usage, thanks to its intelligent monitoring and control functions.
