Abstract
ABSTRACT This study examines Nigeria's foreign policy during the Murtala/Obasanjo military administration (1975-1979), aiming to analyze the key drivers, objectives, and outcomes of the country's external relations during this period. The research objectives include identifying the major shifts in Nigeria's foreign policy, assessing the impact of military rule on diplomatic relations, and evaluating the effectiveness of the administration's foreign policy decisions. The study employs a qualitative research approach, relying on secondary sources such as academic books, journal articles, policy documents, and reputable online resources. The analysis draws from existing literature on Nigerian foreign policy, military rule, and international relations. Key sources include works by Nigerian scholars, official government documents, and international organization reports. The findings reveal that the Murtala/Obasanjo administration's foreign policy was characterized by a significant shift towards Africa-centricity, anti-imperialism, and regional leadership. The administration's decisions, such as Nigeria's role in the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), demonstrated a commitment to regional cooperation and development. However, the study also highlights the challenges posed by military rule, including limited diplomatic expertise and international skepticism. Overall, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of Nigeria's foreign policy dynamics during periods of military rule and its implications for the country's regional and global influence.
