A Study of the Pattern of Language Choice Among Non-Residents of Kachako Village of Takai Local Government Area

Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research is concerns with the pattern of language choice among
children of non-Hausa speakers in Kachako area of Takai Local
Government. The overall objectives of the study were; to examine the
pattern of language choice among Kachako children, to investigate the
rationale behind the choice of pattern of a particular language and to
identify the language that is frequently use by the people of Kachako.
The data was collected from the participants in the selected area. The
study found that the while speaking or making conversation, certain
ways are being used by the speakers. As the study has shown that,
depending on the domain, Hausa, English, Pidgin, Yoruba and Igbo are
all used in the community by the speakers of non-native Hausa. Among
the language patterns, Hausa and Pidgin are being actively in use,
while other language patterns are use in partiality. The research further
illustrates the pattern of language use used in the village is part of
everyday communication in bilingual/multilingual setting as it has been
observed in the Kachako. The overall objectives of the study were as
follows: First, to examine the pattern of language choice among
Kachako children. Secondly, to investigate the rationale behind the
choice of pattern of a particular language. And lastly, to identify the
language that is frequently use by the people of Kachako. The research
found that Pupils from Kachako area mostly use English with their
teachers at school before the start of the lesson and during as well as
after the lessons but there are some few instances where native
tongue in use in schools. It also found that Pidgin English is the most
widely use among youth in tea club and market place followed by
Hausa and English languages. In the hospital, Pidgin English also
dominated the use. But Hausa has the wide range of usage in viewing
center and football fields followed by Pidgin English.
