Abstract
ABSTRACT Mosquitoes are important vectors of diseases and nuisance pests. They can be an annoying serious problem in man's domain as they interfere with work and Spoil hours of leisure time The control of mosquitoes involves the careful consideration of the biology of the mosquitoes and based on scientific surveillance. A response to control nuisance mosquitoes may look very different from a response to control disease vectoring mosquitoes. The search for effective vaccines against malaria and other mosquito responsible diseases are still in progress. Recently, various plant extracts such as neem (Azadiracta Indica) Basil oil (Ocimum basilicum, Ocimum graissimum, Ocimum americanum), citronella grass (cymbopogan nardus), galingale (Alpinia galangal), clove (syzgium aromatium) and thyme (thymus vulgaris) have been studied as-possible mosquito repellant the insecticidal properties of Ocimum basilicum (Basal leaf) are significant because, they can effectively repel and kill mosquitoes reducing the risk of mosquito borne diseases like malaria and dengue fever In a recent study the mosquitocidal and larvicidal activities of an uncharacterized essential oil obtained from the leaves Ocimum bacilicum against mosquitoes. The LD50 and LD90 values of concentrations of 2mg/l and 10mgl resulted in mortalities of Arabiensis larvae exposed to Ocimum bacilicum concentrations after 24. This study demonstrate the potential of volatile oil derived from some Ocimum bacilicum species for use as tropical repellants against nocturnal mosquitoes.
