Influence of Poor Learning Environment on Chemistry Students' Academic Performance in Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State

Abstract
ABSTRACT The study was designed to investigate the influence of poor learning environment on students academic performance in Chemistry Senior secondary school in Enugu North L.G.A of Enugu state. Three purposes of study and four research questions guided the study. The design of the study is descriptive survey while the population of the study consisted of consist of all there all the nine secondary schools in Enugu North local government area with the population of 13,463 senior school students The sample size for the study comprised of three hundred and eighty-eight388) senior student respondents drawn using Yaro Yamene Techniques. An instrument titled "Chemistry Learning Environment Instrument (CLEI)." developed by the researcher was used for the data collection. The instrument was validated by to three experts, two in the department of Chunish Education, Avo in science education department, Faculty Education and one in educational measurement and evaluation. The internal consistency of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha Statistic and the overall score yield 0.75. This was considered high enough for this study. The researcher, along with two research assistants administered the instrument to the respondents. Direct Delivery Technique (DDT) collection method was adopted in data collection. A total of 388 questionnaires were distributed to students, the instruments were properly returned at 100% rate. Mean were used to answer the research questions. The findings revealed that students agreed that Environment plays a major role in teaching and learning of Chemistry in secondary schools, that Class size has effects on students' study habits in Chemistry in secondary schools and that inadequate learning facilities influence students' academic performance in Chemistry in secondary schools in Enugu North L. G.A of Enugu State. Based on the findings of the study, researcher recommended among others that the schools under investigation and other secondary school in Enugu North L.G.A in general endeavor to make their environments conducive, so that their students' academic performance would be impressive. Again, besides learning environment, qualified teachers discipline among students etc, school authorities should evaluate their students' assessments of the learning environmen
