An Assessment of the Level of Language Endangerment: a Case of Ibeno Language

Abstract

ABSRTACT The contribution of the study is to investigate and find out whether Ibeno Language of Akwa Ibom State is endangered, the degree of its endangerment and the factors responsible for its endangerment. It contains the general introduction, the research questions, objectives of the study, review of related literatures, the research methodology in which a part from the library work, Eighty-five written questionnaires have been filled by equal numbers of respondents and the same number has been interviewed, as informants in collecting data for the research. The study also discloses the theoretical framework (EGID and UNESCO). After ascertaining the endangerment of Ibeno language, the work has endeavored to discover the degree of the endangerment of the language and has been found to be shifting/definitely endangered. The research has also discussed that the intergenerational language use of the Ibeno and the negative attitude of the native speakers towards the language have been discovered the major factors that have initiated and hastened the endangerment of the language.
