Abstract
ABSTRACT This study analyzed the linguistic and visual representations of sexual abuse discourse on social media, focusing on the portrayal of abuse against girl children in Nigeria. The primary objectives were to examine the linguistic features in social media discussions, assess visual representations and their emotional impact, identify recurring themes, and evaluate social media’s role in raising awareness and mobilizing support. Using a sample of 30 social media posts and images, the study employed a qualitative approach to provide a nuanced understanding of how social media is utilized in advocacy and awareness campaigns. The findings indicated that social media is a powerful medium for advocacy on sensitive issues like sexual abuse, with specific linguistic choices and visual elements effectively communicating messages of resistance, empowerment, and collective solidarity. Language used in these posts, including direct address phrases such as "MY BODY, MY CHOICE, STOP RAPING US," was shown to engage viewers by confronting them with the realities of abuse. Visuals further amplified these messages, often portraying emotional expressions and symbols that resonated deeply with audiences. The study demonstrates that social media content, when strategically crafted, can serve as a potent tool in challenging societal norms, educating the public, and fostering empathy for vulnerable groups. Overall, the study’s findings highlight the critical role of social media in giving voice to marginalized groups and advocating for societal change, reinforcing that digital platforms are not merely spaces for information exchange but are powerful channels for activism and mobilization.
