Abstract
The construction industry plays a vital role in Nigeria’s economic development, yet small indigenous construction firms face numerous challenges that impact their competence and ability to deliver projects effectively. This study examines the factors affecting the competence of these firms and how they influence project delivery in terms of time, cost, and quality. Key issues identified include financial constraints, limited access to skilled labour, poor project management practices, technological deficiencies, and regulatory barriers. The research also explores the relationship between competence and project performance, highlighting the need for managerial, technical, and financial improvements. Using a combination of primary data collected from small construction firms in Nigeria and secondary sources, the study employs statistical analysis to assess the level of competence and the major obstacles affecting project execution. Findings indicate that inadequate funding, lack of training opportunities, and inefficient project management significantly hinder project completion and quality. The study also identifies potential strategies for improving competence, including policy support, financial assistance, capacity-building programs, and the adoption of modern construction technologies. The research concludes that enhancing the competence of small indigenous construction firms is crucial for improving project delivery and overall industry sustainability. By addressing financial, managerial, and technological challenges, these firms can enhance their competitiveness and contribute more effectively to Nigeria’s infrastructure development. The study offers recommendations for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and construction firms to foster growth and efficiency in the sector.
